Recently, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have been testing a gene that may prevent you from putting on fat! They are trying to shed some light on carbohydrate metabolism and its role on the obesity epidemic.
…Think about it…You can alter your DNA and you would never have to worry about gaining weight ever again!
Scientists have determined a gene that is linked to your propensity to turn carbohydrates into fat. It’s known as the DNA-PK gene.
These same scientists have been breeding mice without this DNA-PK gene. When this gene was removed from the mice they found that although the mice ate the same equivalent carbs as those in a control group they stayed lean.
I know…this research was performed on mice. The good new is that there is hope because humans have the same gene as do mice. So the researchers are hoping to have the same success on humans.
So with all that said it seems that obesity does have a significant genetic factor. But before you go and blame your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, for being overweight lets take a step back…
Sure there might be a gene you carry that predisposes you to putting on body fat. But are you taking responsibility for your own body? Can you honestly say you have looked at your own lifestyle and evaluated your eating habits. Are you eating healthy? Are you exercising regularly? Are you managing your stress levels?
The bottom line is you are responsible for your body. You are responsible for what you see in the mirror. If you have a genetic predisposition for putting fat it doesn’t give you an excuse…it gives you a reason to be that much more concerned with what you do put in your mouth and how much exercise you get on a daily basis!
So it doesn’t help to blame your genes if you want to lose those unwanted pounds. You have to take responsibility for your actions and start doing the things you know you should be doing to lose that unwanted weight now!
Once you’ve gained control back over yourself then you can consider the genetic modification of your DNA to assist in not putting on fat in the future…but not before you have established the proper lifestyle habits to ensure you are living a a healthy life!
