On June 18 at 9 AM, Laird Hamilton and Team Surfing USA will embark on a 3,000-mile cycle race from Malibu, California to the Statue of Liberty in New York as part of the notoriously grueling trans-American cycling competition Race Across America.

To make things more difficult, the four-man relay team has opted to standup paddle 110-miles from Malibu to Oceanside before the race even starts and complete a similar paddle around the Statue of Liberty upon the race’s conclusion. Aside from raising money for Lou Gehrig’s Disease and autism, the team aims to challenge the current trans-American cycling world record of 5 days 18 hours and 4 minutes. To give you an idea, these four will alternate in maintaining a speed of about 25 MPH nonstop for five days; certainly not for the faint of heart.

“I just want to get from my house in Malibu to the Statue of Liberty,” says Laird Hamilton.

As part of this superhuman effort, Team Surfing USA will be providing SurferMag.com exclusive photos, text, and video updates as they trek across the nation. So check back throughout the week for live updates on their progress.
