Well I must say today I feel pretty good. I have been working out more consistently and doing things that stregthen my quads, hamstrings. Such as long stairs. I was able to do 6 pretty comfortably. I felt good, strong. I could feel my quads firming up! So hopefully I will be ready for that bikini ug. Also today's speed squats burned so I know it was working!
I have also been really watching what I eat which also makes a big difference...

Went on a 4 mile run with some friends this AM. It was so nice and crisp outside- just stopped raining and the sun came out!

Now it's onto cleaning the house. I really wish I could wave a wand and the house would be perfect (like in Sleeping Beauty!)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

So on Sunday my husband said 'honey, go workout take some time to yourself, I'll watch (my daughter)' It felt like Christmas but I couldn't decide what I wanted to do. Beach, track, gym...then it hit me! I haven't been to the stairs in ages. I love the stairs? Sooo today I am making a workout list and will print it out and put it above my computer. How could I forget such an enjoyable workout :) Did I mention it's REALLY hard! So steep and the stairs go forever 8 flights total. I just googled a stair photo to give this blog a bit of excitement! Let's see how it turns out!

My hubby and I bought some new running shoes this weekend! Nice Valentine's gift as my other shoes were about done from the half marathon training. Ran in them today and they will need a bit of break in time, but are at least comfy!

We MAY be adopting a dog...emphasis on MAY. We met this little 6 pound Chihuahua mix after the half marathon last weekend. His name is Honda (I drive a Honda!). He is a very people friendly dog and seems mellow. Our only pause is that we do have 2 cats and my husbands job situation is not 100% (he is in IT and works at an advertising company- they recently lost a BIG account). If my hubby did get laid off, we could move in with family, but having a dog there may or may not be ok. It sure would be nice to see into the future in these situations!!! We are thinking long and hard about this- we are asking close friends is they would be willing to take in the little one if (for some strange reason) we could not keep him if we had to move. Lots to think about!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and Valentine's Day!!!!

I finished my first half marathon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so happy that I did it! I was "planning" to have run this race last year (in 2009)- but in Sept/ Oct of 08 I had three blood clots in my lung. I am lucky to have lived through that! Anyway, being able to participate in this race was a very emotional thing. I had tears in my eyes when I crossed the finish line. :)

There was a great crowd cheering the runners on. A few signs I saw on the course: "Run as if the INS was chasing you!", "Your feet only hurt because of all the ass you are kicking" and "Of course it's supposed to be hard! --That's what she said!!!" The cheers from the crowd really helped those last three miles :)

I went to yoga today to help stretch out my legs. It felt really good.

Tomorrow I start Physiology!!!!!!!!!! SOOO SCARRRY!!! It's my last class for my Nursing prerequisite classes, but it is going to be a lot of work.

I hope everyone is having a great week!!!

I slacked off this morning, drug my feet as long as possible hoping I could create some kind of diversion worthy of avoiding my workout. I am the queen of procrastination and excuses! The rowing machine is about as cardiorific as I get. I hate running, always have, and probably always will. My 5'10" frame feels every ounce of my 160lbs that get tossed around when exercising. Did I mention how much I hate running? My knees are not in bad shape but I like to use that excuse because my knees actually did hurt the last few times I ran....years ago. Well, they hurt because they're taking 160lbs of beating! And, it's partly the shoes. I know, I know, Vibrams are such a faddish thing and I fought hard to not give in. But, the V5 Fingers won me over when my husband (who is a certified stud and has to run as part of his job) surprised me with a pair for my 34th birthday. He, also 34, has had 2 knee operations (one on each) in the past year(others in previous years, too) to remove debris and bone fragments. Part of his recovery included running with these funny shoes and it seems to be the exact opposite of what you SHOULD do when you run on bad knees. But the science does not lie and I have watched my husband not only fully recover from his injuries but now run faster than he ever has in his life ... when he runs in his Vibrams. He tackles it all, sand, soil, and pavement and has not complained once about joint paint afterward. I started to wear mine on our hikes and camping trips and instantly fell in love. It was like being a kid again and going barefoot but you do have some protection from cooties and sharp things. Then, he encouraged me to wear them while working out in our garage gym. I can grip the floor and have better balance and stability in my movements. I have been known to roll an ankle or two in my crosstrainers but my feet are firmly planted with these suckers! So, back to the running. I decided to fight my inner critic today and I jog around my neighborhood. Using "mapmyrun.com" I plotted out about half a mile and figured I would enjoy the stroll after giving one block of effort. With Metallica and Godsmack pumping me up, I strapped my Vibrams on and hit the pavement. I felt so good passing my first route that I kept going ... and 1.27 miles later I came back to my house feeling like She-Ra, that's right, the Princess of Power. It took me 13 mintues and by my former military standards I would be on probation for such a sucky time but I didn't care. I really ran, like non-stop! I know there are so many reasons to laugh at my little "go me" post, but this was a big step today! I CAN run and it won't kill me! I finished off with 10 sets of 10 Knees to Elbows and Knee Push Ups in about 10 minutes. Feelin' like a rockstar today and I'm motivated to do it again. It was liberating, lung burning and exhilarating. I loved splashing through puddles of melted snow and seeing my footprints behind me, looking like bare feet with all the separate toes. I passed 2 ladies walking and they had a good giggle over my funky footwear. I had a good giggle, too, knowing that I was earning my smoothie. I'm curious to see how I'll feel tomorrow. I have definitely felt worse than this after some workouts so I'm not too frightened. Feeling like a goofball next to Konacath's half marathon, but hey, we've all got to start somewhere. Today was my day!

Best intentions. I guess that's where I am today. Winter has really thrown me for a loop when it comes to getting out and moving. This has been an unusual winter here in NC. Dec/Jan saw highs about 20 degress lower than we are used to. And I don't have the clothing to get out into that nasty weather. To top that off, its the "the gym is so crowded in January" time, that I don't even want to go there. I've got several of Gabby's dvds, but just haven't used them. UGH. I did get out last week because it was so nice and I was able to take in my favorite walk around the lake. But, then the snow storm hit, and now I"m sitting in the house. UGH UGH. I need to find my mojo again.

So, running on the treadmill is NOT FOR ME! Because of the wild weather, I decided to do a 6 mile run on the treadmill at the gym instead of braving the elements.

Well, it lasted .72 mile. I couldn't get my stride right, couldn't get into a rhythm. I decided to go run at the Harbor instead. The clouds had lifted and it was even a little sunny for a time! (CA is experiencing huge rain storms at the moment).

Running outside was like an adventure- I was fighting the wind and enjoyed looking at a HUGE swell. The waves were at least 20 feet! There was three jet skiiers out and even a guy on a SUP. Talk about brave!

Before I knew it, 4 miles was up. I looked at my Garmin (GPS watch) and I managed to keep a good pace despite the wind and branches in my way. So much better than a treadmill!!!

I am planning on running early tomorrow as more storms are forecasted. :)

I have had a super busy week and am glad that it is coming to a close! Lots of errands, doctor appointments, family stuff, but all in all has been a good week :)

Tomorrow is another l-o-n-g run with my running group (12 miles!!! eekk!!). I am really looking forward to it. Even though I know that getting up at 530am and running in the cold is not the most comfortable thing in the world, I am grateful that I am able to do so. I am trying to focus on all the things that I am grateful for rather than the little annoyances along life's path.

Today is a rest day meaning no exercise, but I still need to clean the house. How I wish the cats would clean up and I could come home to a pristine house without lifting a finger :)

Hope everyone has a great Friday!!!!

This is a comment I made in response to Gabby's "You Are Fabulous" blog that is now in Gabby Daily - the place where the previous blogs are at. I think it fits in with today's Gabby daily as well...

This blog is really packed with emotion. It had so much emotion that it caused a ripple-effect in me. Since I read it I have started to play tennis again after a "raising two kids hiatus", and I have reduced playing on facebook by 90%. I have reduced being interested in fake media fed delirium by 95%. This extra time I have spent working out with more intensity at the gym, and hitting the tennis ball every day. Since I have read this blog, something seemingly magical has happened in my life. I have met young people, old people, cool people, negative people. I have so much energy I feel like I am going to fly away..I am in love with life.. Thanks for being you, Gabby! You have rubbed off on me....I, actually GET IT!!!
